Ardour 9.0 Open-Source DAW Brings Pianoroll Windows, Cue Recording, and More

This release also introduces support for multi-touch interaction as provided by the operating system on Linux and Windows.

Ardour 9.0 open-source digital audio workstation software has been released today as a major update that introduces numerous new features and improvements.

Highlights of Ardour 9.0 include dedicated pianoroll windows by double-clicking on a MIDI region to edit it, direct editing of the contents of MIDI cues, region FX support to apply any plugin to a given audio region only, and the ability to record directly into cue slots, which makes Ardour a “looper”.

Ardour 9.0 also introduces a dedicated perceptual analyzer window that allows you to visualize the live spectrum of multiple signals while overlaying individual sources like tracks and busses on top of each other, as well as the ability to use keyboard modifiers, arrow keys, and the Enter key to add new automation control points.

Other new features include support for note brushing, support for importing mixer strips from arbitrary Ardour sessions as new tracks or mapping existing tracks to processing in mixer strips of external sessions, and support for multi-touch interaction as provided by the operating system on Linux and Windows.

Ardour 9.0 also brings several key UI changes, such as an updated application bar and pane control with cleaner and reorganized content, a redesigned editor List panel, a tabbed interface for the New Session / Recent Sessions dialog, an updated Ruler area with additional controls, and a new home for MIDNAM controls in the header context menu.

Starting with this release, Ardour now supports the concept of MIDI files and regions that are longer than their data would suggest, better handles visible note range in MIDI tracks and pianorolls, and allows shifting of all existing MIDI later in a region/clip during a drag operation.

Among other noteworthy changes, the default file format is now WAV-compatible RF64, color schemes are now available for inactive selected tracks, the ACE Amp plugin received click-free bypass/enable, and it’s now possible to restore hardware-to-hardware connections for internal backends.

Ardour 9.0 also introduces new MIDI binding maps for the Behringer CMD LC-1, Novation Circuit, Nektar Impact GXP, Nektar Impact LX, Arturia Keylab 49/61/88 mk2, and LAudio (Worlde) EasyControl.9 controllers, as well as new MIDNAM files for Boss GT-8 and SE-70, Whammy DT, and XLN Audio – Addictive Drums.

Of course, there are numerous other improvements and countless bug fixes, so check out the release notes for more details. Meanwhile, you can install Ardour from your distro’s repositories or as a Flatpak app from Flathub. Ardour 9.0 is available for download as a source tarball and ready-to-run binaries from the official website.
